When I was planning my wedding, I didn't have a wedding planner. I didn't know what I was getting into! Although I chose our florist, venue, and place cards, I had no idea how many other things would be involved. Fortunately, the caterer, Standing Room Only, acted almost as a full-service planner, helping me not only with the menu, but with the tables, chairs, place settings, and even the planning and timing of the whole wedding day. But the main reason you go to a caterer is because of the food, so I think I will focus on that. Standing Room Only makes the most sumptuous food, and can provide anything from an authentic sushi bar to Spanish tapas. I wanted to have Japanese and Latin stations, and here are some of the delicious things Standing Room Only created for us. Before the ceremony, the guests enjoyed orange iced tea and mango mojitos. The hors d'oeuvres included trays of tuna tartare with wasabi aioli on a grilled tortilla triangle, duck breast with candied kumquats on a sweet potato gaufrite, aged ricotta bruschetta and cashew-crusted chicken with citrus marmalade. We also had buckwheat blini with crème Fraiche and caviar, I guess we pulled out all the stops. Next we had some stations. One was sushi, another had Latin American food like scallop ceviche with avocado and diced tomato in a lime vinaigrette. For our sit-down dinner, guests started with a mixed green salad with citrus vinaigrette and spring rolls, then moved to a choice between beef tenderloin or sauteed sea bass with roasted corn, zucchini, tomatoes, chanterelles, white beans and basmati rice. I should also mention that dietary restrictions were accommodated. I had a relative who ate no onions and another who ate almost nothing. For dessert (I actually ordered the wedding cake myself from Sarabeth's, but Standing Room Only served it with raspberry coulis), we had sorbet in the shape of fruits and berries, linzer heart cookies, and Standing Room Only's famous decaf iced cappuccino with rock candy swizzle sticks. Also, and this was separate, although Standing Room Only helped me coordinate it... we had a chocolate fountain! Unfortunately, it really is true, as a bride you barely get to eat anything. I'm glad that I went to the tasting so that I could actually get to try all of this stuff. I wish we could get married again so I could order all this great food! Now most of our nights are spent eating frozen macaroni and cheese with our toddler. ;-)
