Alex Hornby & Darshan Stevens: PhotoJ meets Fine-Art
Darshan Stevens
I was trained as a photojournalist—I graduated with a Diploma from Western Academy of Photography in 2009 and went on to work for weekly newspaper in Victoria. Soon enough I was shooting my colleague's weddings on the weekends. I realized I loved photographing weddings, being in close proximity to such an intimate and eventful time of people's lives. Being entrusted as the memory keeper—documenting, and combining that documentation with the art of light, exposure, composition—has been overwhelmingly fulfilling. Capturing the unexpected moments from unexpected angles, is a big part of what keeps me feeling like every wedding is brand new, and totally unique. I'm a photojournalist at heart.

Darshan and I became a team in 2012, shortly after we fell in love and decided to build a life together. I have always been passionate about the visual arts and photography in particular, so it couldn't have been a better move for me to become a wedding photographer. When I discovered that wedding photography could actually be a vehicle for creative expression and serious art, I was hooked. I think Darshan is particularly happy because I carry most of the gear now, leaving her to roll around in the muck if necessary (you would not believe what this girl will do for her shot).
