The historic Belvedere Ballrooms in downtown Baltimore have been lovingly preserved for over 100 years. When The Belvedere first opened in 1903, the Charles Ballroom was simply known as the “Main Dining Room.” It operated as such until the 1950’s when it was renamed the Charles Ballroom and became a fine dining supper club. Live music floated through the room and war-time guests dined on Baltimore’s finest cuisine, sipped sherry, and danced the jitterbug adorned in their evening finest.

The Grand Ballroom has played host to Baltimore’s most historic events and guests. In 1911, Woodrow Wilson, once a professor at the Johns Hopkins University, stayed at the Belvedere while attending the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore, which nominated him for President. Perhaps the most notable event in its history, the Grand also welcomed the Queen of Rumania to America with a seven course royal meal.

Named after General John Eager Howard who fought in the Revolutionary War and was Governor of Maryland, the handsome John Eager Howard Room was originally called the “Tea Room” because of its afternoon tea held daily for Baltimore’s aristocracy. Baltimore native, Wallis Warfield (later the Duchess of Windsor) regularly attended tea here. In 1981 the Restaurants & Institutions Interior Design Award was awarded for the restoration and preservation of the John Eager Howard Room. The walls feature murals of turn of the century Baltimore hand painted on Japanese rice paper from the 1930’s.

The Owl Bar was built in 1903 as part of the original Belvedere, and was known simply as the Bar at the Belvedere. Lined with spittoons, bookmakers, and rough talk, the bar was hardly a place for ladies and was open only to men. In the 1930’s, the Owl Bar quickly became Baltimore’s most notorious speakeasy

Designed with an eye to Edwardian’s fascination with a return to nature, the Palm Room was named for the leafy green plants that originally filled the space. The Belvedere’s original reading room had doors that opened up to an outside courtyard and Tiffany glass skylights shone daylight into the handsome interior that would rival any hotel in the Mid-Atlantic.

The Platinum Ballroom was originally known as the Assembly Room and once held a stage that was located on the North end of the room. Lectures, magic shows, conventions, and plays graced the stage but in 1961 the stage was removed to make the room more spacious for larger banquets. The arched ceiling features original architectural details and the name reflects the platinum damask paper lining the walls.
